Itäisen Suomen Puutuoteklusteri (ITÄPUU)

ITÄPUU-hankkeen tavoitteena on vahvistaa itäisen Suomen elinvoimaa kehittämällä puutuotealan liiketoimintaa, uusia tuotteita sekä palveluita rakentamisen tarpeisiin.

Puutuoteteollisuuden yhteiskunnallinen merkitys perustuu merkittävästi aluetalouteen. Ala on tärkeä työllistäjä etenkin kasvukeskusten ulkopuolella olevilla alueilla, joissa työpaikkojen tarve on suuri. Rakennustuotteet voidaan jalostaa korkean jalostusasteen tuotteiksi lähellä niiden raaka-ainelähdettä.

Suomessa rakennusteollisuudelta puuttuu puutuoteosien ja -liitosten vakiointi. Siksi mallinnus on hidasta ja kilpailutus on vaikeaa. Hanke edistää puurakennusalan toimijoiden yhteistyötä koko maassa kehittämällä, mallintamalla ja havainnollistamalla puurakenneratkaisuja niiden vakioinnin parantamiseksi.

Vuonna 2022 puutuotteiden vienti Suomesta oli 3,9 mrd. euroa. Teollisen puurakentamisen tuotteiden ja palveluiden kehittäminen luo merkittävän potentiaalin alueen viennin lisäämiselle.

CircWood: Increasing the Climate Change Mitigation Potential of Wood Used in Construction

The overall aim of the CircWood project was model the effect that recirculating wood within the built environment has on carbon storage in wooden buildings, taking into account different wood use scenarios and the implementation of design-for-disassembly (DfD). In the first part of the project, buildings containing the greatest proportion of wood were identified. It was found that wooden buildings account for about 84% and 99% of the permanent and free-time residential buildings respectively and for 58% of non-residential buildings. Demolition and waste management practices were surveyed with the intention of gaining knowledge about the quantity, quality and dimensions of demolition wood as well as a qualitative assessment of attitudes towards wood cascading. Cascading options were investigated through desk research and interviews. In the final phase of the project, a model was created to demonstrate how retaining wood in the technosphere (through cascading) increases the amount of carbon stored. Augmented levels of cascading (i.e. through DfD) increase the level of carbon stored and for a longer period.

This basic research study has demonstrated that cascading wood from buildings can provide a means of increasing C stored in the built environment, helping to mitigate climate change. Further work is ongoing to assess the substitution effects that accrue from the use of cascaded wood. Design-for-disassembly is seen as a means of increasing the quality and quantity of wood recovered from the demolition of buildings. Modeling suggests that retaining recycled wood in products that last a long time (e.g. as other structural components in buildings), increases the amount of C stored. Nevertheless, the most effective way of increasing C storage is to extend the lifetime of wooden buildings.

Tutkimushankkeen tavoitteena on selvittää:

1. Onko puurakentamisella toteutettuun kaupunginosaan muuttaminen kasvavilla kaupunkialueilla kuluttajan näkökulmasta panos-hyötysuhteeltaan kannattava ilmastoteko?
2. Miten puurakentamista pitäisi ohjata kaupungeissa kiinteistötalouden ja ilmastotavoitteiden näkökulmasta?

Lisäksi hankkeen tavoitteena on kehittää hiilijalanjälkien ja hiilivarastojen state-of-the-art mallinnusta. Yhteiskunnallisena tavoitteena on lisätä kaupunkien, kiinteistöalan sekä kuluttajien tietoisuutta
puurakentamisen ilmastohyödyistä.

GoWood: Incentivising wood use in construction to mitigate climate change

The potential of using wood in construction to mitigate climate change, as part of a broader strategy for sustainable forest use, has been widely mooted;
wood in buildings acts as a long-term carbon store and substitutes ‘energy intensive’ materials like steel and concrete. Wood is often the material of choice in energy-efficient construction, due to its good thermal properties; hence, further GHG emissions are also avoided in the use phase of the building. Whilst there is increasing interest in using wood in larger projects it is by no means widespread and there is little evidence of increasing penetration in more everyday construction projects. Incentivizing an increase in the use of wood in construction, whilst ensuring sustainability over the entire supply chain is needed if the full potential of wood construction is to be exploited to mitigate climate change. One approach is to create instruments that:
1. enable substitution of GHG intense material leading to GHG emission avoidance;
2. incentivize enhanced carbon storage in long-lived wood products by:
i). promoting reuse and repurposing of wood to extend its useful lifetime; and
ii). enabling, at their end of life, replacement of shorter-lived wood-based products in different processes.

To do this, rigorous accounting of carbon is required since emissions occur, or are avoided, at different points along the value chain. Digital technologies, such as distributed ledgers (DLT such as blockchains), offer significant potential in this accounting process. In this first phase of the project, key stakeholders along the value chain will be identified and brought together in order to scope the use of digital tools in GHG accounting, underpinning incentive mechanisms.

BASAJAUN – Building A SustainAble Joint between rurAl and UrbaN Areas Through Circular And Innovative Wood Construction Value Chains

European rural areas will boost when their natural resources constitute the basis of innovative and sustainable value chains with a high positive economic impact. In this sense, forests constitute an asset that provide not only ecosystems and biodiversity, but also a valuable and sustainable raw material, ”wood”. Wood is consumed by various sectors, including one of the most ”raw materials” demanding sector, the construction.

BASAJAUN project is a puzzle composed of 1st and 2nd transformation companies, research organizations, associations and public bodies that are focused on maximizing the forest value through its use in wood construction, with 30 partner organizations in total. Its main goal is to optimize the use of wood resources to enable the construction of a medium sized building (16 dwellings with 4 floors) with the lower possible forest hectares – that will depends on the tree species and the forest local peculiarities (climate, surface, ..). The whole process will be optimised to maximize the consume of wood products from the forest (solid wood, fibers, veneers, bark, sawdust, etc.).

For the purpose of the project, a) innovative wood-based construction materials (thermal insulation, composites, varnishes, SIPs) and systems (structure, facades, floors, walls, roof and fixings) will be developed and upscaled, b) two full -scale demo buildings (Finland and France) that use those products will be constructed, c) digitalization of the whole construction value chain (from forest to building) will be done and d) the rural development impact will be studied at regional level. The environmental impact of the products of these value chains will be assessed as well. Besides, to assure a sustainable impact of the project a novel thematic platform to integrate the stakeholders of the wood region with urban areas will be developed. Besides, BASAJAUN leverages the previous results of successful projects where the innovative materials and systems were designed at laboratory and semi-industrial scale.

Wood2 – New Competitive wood-based interior materials and systems for modern wood construction

Title of the research project Competitive wood-based interior  materials and systems for modern wood construction Wood2New

Coordinator of the project: Yrsa Cronhjort

Project period 01.03.2014-28.02.2017

Introduction

Interior spaces and indoor air quality significantly affect our physical and mental well-being and comfort, especially in healthcare and living environments. The qualitative performance of buildings depends on several factors. Temperature and moisture are central characteristics of interior spaces and research suggests that these can be affected by the choice of surface materials. Wood’s propensity to interact with moisture can be put to good effect in helping to mediate the interior environment of buildings. As the humidity level rises, wood adsorbs moisture from the surrounding air and, when the humidity drops, the stored moisture is released back into the environment. Associated with adsorption there is a release of heat which can raise the surface temperature of wood; conversely heat is required during desorption. These processes combined with the other thermal properties of wood give rise to the concept of ‘hygrothermal mass’, which may have the potential to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. These attributes are gradually being recognized. Interior air quality is affected by, for example, volatile organic compounds (VOC), formaldehyde, air-borne particles and microbes, as well as other factors. The sources of chemical compounds and particulates  include human activity, structures, surfaces, furnishings, and the air itself. Reference values for various chemical compounds and particles are defined, and values lower than these usually result from normal use and do not pose a risk to human health. The amount of formaldehyde in wood products has been  nationally regulated since 1980, and in 2004 the European Standard EN 13986 established formaldehyde   classes E1 and E2 for use in construction. To further the development of indoor air quality regulations, it is now important to quantify the VOCs released from materials, including wood. The odor of wood is widely recognized and used in, for example, air fresheners. However, the amount and long-term development of  VOCs released by wood material in a living environment have not yet been clearly identified. The importance of interior comfort grows with increasingly energy-efficient building. From January 2021 onwards all new buildings within the European Union are to be built to nearly zero energy standards (nZEB). In various pilot projects, wood has so far been used sparingly, even if the characteristics of wood materials support the creation of a pleasant space. Empirical studies have shown that wood is perceived to be a pleasant, warm, breathing, and timeless material. Europe is also aging; future social sustainability requires accessibility and comfort in our living and care environments. Basic requirements concern design for all, good acoustics and good interior air quality. Wood also supports the feeling of a homely environment; it is a familiar material, and the warm surface increases comfort.  Materials and products with environmentally, socially and economically sound values should have an advantage if they can deliver competitive performance. The aim of Wood2New was to reinforce and improve the competitiveness of wood-based interior products and systems based on these values.
